Margaret Elizabeth Hanson

December 31, 2009

Margaret Elizabeth Hanson, 89,  died December 31, 2009 in Des Moines, Iowa. 

 

Margaret was born June 24, 1920 in Osborne, Kansas.  She attended Kansas State University and the University of Kansas.  She was an Registered Nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center for 34 years and also a member of the KU Nurses Alumni Association.  She was a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

 

Margaret’s passion was her commitment to the work of the church, always supporting the mission of the church by volunteering as much as she could; be it the fundraising efforts or in service to the community or her fellow church community members.  Prior to her retirement, her dedication as a skilled nurse at KU Medical Center and after retirement, continuing to work with the school nurse in her neighborhood elementary school along with assisting students to improve their reading skills.

 

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Roy P. Hanson.  She is survived by daughter Linda Sue Levine and husband Douglas; son Dr. David R. Hanson and wife Janet; brother Robert Bleam and wife Berta; grandchildren Dr. Todd Levine and wife Kerri, Jennifer Arbuszewski and husband Bryan, Leta Hanson, Jeremy Hanson and wife Sasha, and Kira Hanson; and two great-grandsons, Lucas Arbuszewski and Raidyn Hanson.

Funeral service will be at 10 am, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Shawnee United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.

Elizabeth Ann Heble Rieke

December 31, 2009

Elizabeth Ann Heble Rieke, 91, Mission Hills, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2009 at home surrounded by her loving family.  

 

She was born April 1, 1918 in Hebron, Nebraska to Robert J. Heble and Elizabeth Greiveldinger Heble.  Her family moved to Atwood, Kansas in 1926 where she grew up and attended Atwood High School.  Elizabeth joined the Women’s Army Corps during WWII and was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington and Camp Abbott, Oregon.  She married Charles H. Rieke of New York City on April 12, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was stationed.  After the war they lived in New York City for three years before returning to Atwood to live and raise their children.  The family moved to the Kansas City area in 1964 where she continued to reside.  She was a dedicated mother, homemaker and gardner who was beloved by all.

 

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Charles H. Rieke; daughter, Roberta (Bobbie) Ahrens; brothers Pearl, Leo and Robert Heble; and sisters Geneva (Jim) Vrbas and Irene (Tom) Ksiazek.  She is survived by children Liz (Fred) McDaniel, Charlotte (Brian) Lander, Greg (Barbara) Rieke, Louise Rieke, John Rieke, Kurt (Terri) Rieke; grandchildren Chad (Brenda) Lander, Brady Lander, Chris Rieke, Taylor Rieke, Perry Rieke, Kait McDaniel, Elizabeth Ahrens, Jessica Ahrens and son-in-law William Ahrens; three great-grandchildren Gran, Tori and Carly Lander; and by many nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be from 10-11 am, Friday, January 8, 2010  at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas.   Rosary recitation will begin at 11:00 am followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m.  Burial at Ft. Leavenworth Cemetery.

Thomas Paul McMurray, Jr.

Thomas Paul McMurray, Jr., 66, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family.  

 

Tom was born March 11, 1943 to the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Paul McMurray, Sr. in Kansas City, Missouri.  Tom attended De La Salle High School and graduated from Center High School in 1962.  After graduating from high school, Tom joined the United States Army, and served with the Special Forces in Vietnam.  After returning from military service, Tom married Kay in Overland Park, Kansas.  He joined the Prairie Village Fire Department and served for 30 years until his retirement in 1995.  While with the Prairie Village Fire Department, Tom worked for The JO Transit and retired in March of 2009.   He enjoyed music, dancing and spending time with his wife & family. 

 

Tom is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay; two daughters and their husbands, Laurie Massey & husband Brian and Wendy Clark and husband Michael; 6 grachildren, Zachary Myers, Christopher, Timothy, Katelynn, McKenzie, and Ariana; and three sisters, Shirley, Karen and  Debbie.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society,  P.O. Box 22718; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  73123-1718.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday,  January 5, 2010 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2010 at the chapel. 

Allen Dean McCown

December 30, 2009

Allen Dean McCown, 67, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House.  Allen was born in Tulsa, OK. He graduated from Hutchinson, KS High School in 1960. He earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University in 1965 and a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri in 1967 While at Kansas State, he played in a jazz band. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves at Richards Gabaur Air Force Base for two years. He worked at American Electric Power Service, New York, NY from 1969 – 71. He joined Black & Veatch in Kansas City in 1971 and was still employed there when he passed away.

 Allen was a Sr. Electrical Engineer, serving as a Protective Relay Specialist for generating stations. He worked on projects all over the United States and in 14 foreign countries. He created new Mathcad software for many applications. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was a Professional Engineer since 1975. He was a member of Sigma Tau, a national general engineering honor society. He was also a member of Etta Kappa Nu, a national electrical engineering honor society.

 Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and L. E. McCown and a brother, Brian McCown. He is survived by two cousins, William C. Mullarky, Prairie Village, KS and Charles Messner, Northfield, MN.

 

Memorial Services

 

Memorial services will be in the chapel of Village Presbyterian Church, 67th and Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS on Saturday, January 2, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends contribute to the charity of their choice in Allen’s memory.

Darryl Gregg Lafferty

Darryl Gregg Lafferty, 50, Lenexa, Kansas passed away Monday, Dec.ember 28, 2009 at St. Luke’s South Hospital, Overland Park, Kansas. 

 

Darryl was born September 4, 1959 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a 1977 graduate of DeSoto High School.  Darryl was currently manager of Spectrum Carpets in Shawnee.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

 

Darryl is survived by his wife, Valerie (Chrisman) Lafferty; son, Brett Lafferty; daughter, Whitney Lafferty all of Lenexa, Kansas;  father and mother-in-law, L.J. and Gertrude Chrisman, Easton, Kansas; brother-in-law, Steve Chrisman, Easton, Kansas; and sister-in-law, Joyce Webb and husband, Kenny, Shawnee, Kansas.

Lowell L. Baird

December 29, 2009

Lowell L. Baird, 99, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away December 29, 2009.

 

He was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas on April 15, 1910, and lived most of his life in the Wyandotte and Johnson County, Kansas areas.  After graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1929, he served an apprenticeship under the Kansas City Stereotyper’s and Electrotyper’s Union and worked many years as a journeyman plate maker.  He retired from the Kansas City Kansan in 1978 after 28 years as mechanical superintendent.  Previous employers were Continental Color Press and Rotogravure Co.

 

A veteran of World War II, he was never in combat, but served as First Sergeant with the 567th Quartermaster Railhead Company at Liege, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.  He survived buzz bomb attacks on the city of Liege and was later injured in a land mine explosion near Furth, Germany.

 

He was a member of Lenexa United Methodist Church and was formerly active in trade and civic groups.

 

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise Baird; a sister, Edna Irish; a sister-in-law, Imogene Baird; and many nieces and nephews.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made  to the Lenexa United Methodist Church, 9138 Caenen Lake Road, Lenexa, Kansas  66215.

 

Visitation and Memorial Service

 

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  A memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm.

Edmund C. Thomas, Jr.

Edmund C. Thomas, Jr., 92, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at his home.       

     

Edmund was born April 21, 1917 in Kansas City, Kansas to Edmund and Georgia (Adams) Thomas.  He graduated from Argentine High School and from Kansas State University with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He did post graduate work in Atomic Physics and Archeology from the University of Kansas.  Edmund learned to fly at the Fairfax Airport in Kansas City, Kansas. He worked in the mechanical engineering field for a number of firms, the last being Wilcox Electric, where he worked for over 16 years before retirement.  He was a member of the Kansas State Alumni Group. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Mark Thomas.  He leaves his wife, Marguerite J. (Leffler) Thomas of the home; son, Edmund C. Thomas, III and wife, Kay, Paola, Kansas; three grandsons and their wives, Edmund, IV and Angela Thomas, David and Kristi Thomas and Gregory and Tina Thomas; seven great grandchildren; brother and his wife, Eugene and Gwen Thomas, Prescot, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Alice Robinson, and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley A. Seward

Shirley A. Seward, 74, Merriam, Kansas, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009, at home. 

 

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Edward B. Seward and is survived by two children Wendy Jones, Bellevue, Washington, and Barney Seward, Merriam, Kansas.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3, 2009, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Private burial will be Monday, January 3, 2009, at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Nadine J. Roby

December 28, 2009

Nadine J. Roby, 82, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at her home. 

 

Nadine was born June 18, 1927 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Roy K. and Dorothy (Elliott) Young.  She retired from the IRS in 1991.  She was a longtime member of the Overland Park Church of Christ.

 

Nadine was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Roby in 1964, sister, Geraldine Holland and her parents.  Survivors include four children, Rebecca (Cliff) Slater, Lenexa, Kansas, Peggy (Dwight) Hilpman, Lawrence, Kansas, Scott (Kathy) Roby, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Lanette (Kevin) Woodard, Ames, Iowa; two sisters, Lora Edwards, Henderson, Tennessee and Shirley Harris, Bakersfield, California; and 11 grandchildren.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee; burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  Friends may call from 1-2 pm Thursday, at the chapel.
