Margaret Doris McCoy, 73, Lenexa, Kansas, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Doris and George spent most of their 53 years together traveling the world. She will be greatly missed.
Doris is survived by her husband of 53 years George, two daughters Colleen (Ken) Melrose, Overland Park, Kansas; Sharon Clifton, Olathe, Kansas; two sons Steven (Lauren) McCoy, Ft. Mill South Carolina; Thomas (Leigh) McCoy, Raleigh, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Kenneth Donald Hansen

Kenneth Donald Hansen, 86, Kansas City, Kansas passed away Saturday, November 21, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
Kenneth was born April 13, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri to Martin Hansen and Dora (Strobel) Hansen. He worked on the Kansas City, Kansas Police Force for over 38 years, worked for the railroad for 2 years, and was in the military for 2 years during WWII, fighting for his country.
Kenneth enjoyed gardening, photography, fingerprinting, wood-carving, and bird watching.
Contributions in memory of Kenneth may be made to St. Luke’s Hospital ICU.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dora Hansen, father, Martin Hansen, grandmother, Eveline Strobel, grandfather, Charles Strobel, and his loving wife of 41 years, Helen Louise Hansen. Survivors include his children Karen Louise Stepaniak and Rebecca Eveline Hansen; grandchildren, Jonathan Lee Elmer, Rodney Jason Elmer, wife Rachel, Jaime Elizabeth Stepaniak and Robert Joseph Stepaniak ; great-grandchildren, Isabella Elmer, and Corbin Elmer.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.

Nancy Pflumm DeGraeve Jones, 71, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away, Saturday, November 21, 2009.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Carnie E. Jones; daughter, Sheri (Doug) Rieke, Olathe, Kansas; son, Pete (Gina) DeGraeve, DeSoto, Kansas; sister, Virginia Thayer, Merriam, Kansas; brothers, Paul Pflumm, Jr. and James Pflumm, Sr., both of Stockton, Missouri; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 6 p.m., Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m.

Thomas B. “Burnie” Toombs, 71, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away at Menorah Medical Center Friday, November 20, 2009.
Bernie was a strong Christian man, a good husband, father and grandfather. Bernie owned and operated Jacomo Sheet Metal for numerous years and was a strong member of Sheet Metal Workers Union #2.
Burnie is survived by his wife Donna and one son Bob (Linda) Toombs, Shawnee, Kansas; and two grandchildren, Riley and Ben Toombs.

Robert “Bob” D. Courtney, 58, Overland Park, Kansas passed away at home on Thursday, November 19, 2009.
Bob was an avid music lover and also enjoyed playing the guitar and fishing.
Bob was preceded in death by his father Loran, and he is survived by his mother Phyllis, a sister Pat (John) Arnote, and niece Courtney Arnote.

Mary Rose Henke, 83, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Center.
Mary was born March 13, 1926, in Shawnee, Kansas, to George and Leona Haas. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School. Mary married Albert C. Henke on September 13, 1947. She worked at Western Auto Supply Company, Kansas City Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Lee’s Secretarial Service, Universal Press Syndicate/Andrews-McMeel, and Sach’s Electric.
Until recently, Mary resided at Overland Park Place, where she was an ambassador, Wii bowling champion, and enjoyed bingo and other activities. Many who knew her referred to her as “Sweet Mary.”
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Henke, on March 19, 2009, sisters, Alice Richardson and Helen Zimmer, and brother, John Haas. Survivors include four children, Nancy Henke-Konopasek, Marsha (Pete) Cahill, Don (Kim) Henke, and Sharon (Paul) Cahill; one sister, Irene Smeltzer; sister-in-laws Jane Scherman, Bonnie Brown, and Betty Henke; five grandchildren, Julia Konopasek, Patrick Cahill, Kristi Cahill, Michael Konopasek, and Wade Henke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, with the rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee on Saturday, November 21 , at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Shawnee.
Peter “Pete” Bettink

Peter “Pete” Bettink, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, died November 16, 2009 at his home.
Pete was born in Berlin Germany, and grew up in Germany, Italy and China. He came to the United States just after WW II, and became a U.S. citizen. He landed in Chicago, where he met his wife Mary, who passed away in 1998. He moved to Overland Park in 1965, built his life and raised his family here.
Pete was a long time member of the Lenexa Rotary Club and served as meals chairman.
He is survived by his two sons, Steven & David; two daughters from a prior marriage, Renee Faustrum & Marion Berk; and his sister, Irene Biro.

Teresa “Polly” Powell

Teresa “Polly” Powell, 79, Long Beach, California passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam, Kansas.
Polly was born November 10, 1930 in Kansas City, Kansas to John E. and Agnes (Etchingham) Tolin. She was a member of the St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church and the YMCA.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband, Evan J. Powell in March 2006. Survivors include her son, Mark Powell, Henderson, Nevada; two daughters, Cindy Triesch, Chula Vista, California and Jeanne Powell, Long Beach, California; sister, Lois Moore, Shawnee, Kansas; brother, Bob Tolin, Overland Park, Kansas; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in the Romero Chapel at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas. Burial in the All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach, California.
Wayne L. Fowler M.D.

Wayne L. Fowler, M.D., 86, died at the Sweet Life at Rosehill, Shawnee, Kansas, November 13, 2009, from complications of cancer.
He was born, January 5, 1923, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Morrill and Grace Fowler, and grew up in the Highland Park Area of Topeka.
He graduated high school from Highland Park High School in Topeka in 1941. He then attended Washburn University, Topeka, where he received his B.S. Degree, with honors, in Chemistry in 1944. During this time he joined the Navy and continued in the Navy while attending medical school, at the University of Indiana School of Medicine, in Bloomington and Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating in 1947. He met June Ransom during this time, and they were married on September 4, 1948. They then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he completed his medical internship (1947-1948), and residency in Internal Medicine (1948-1951) at General Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. During this time he also was a member of the Army National Guard. After finishing his residency in 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force, during the Korean War; and was a Flight Surgeon, stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas Nevada. He served from 1951 until 1953, being discharged at the rank of Captain.
In 1953 he and June moved to Concordia, Kansas, where he practiced internal medicine for the remainder of his medical career. He was an internist in the Gelvin-Haughey Clinic as well as the North Central Medical Clinic, from 1953 through 1995, retiring in 1995.
He was extremely active in his medical practice. He was past-president of the Medical Staff of St. Joseph Hospital, Concordia, Kansas. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and received the highest annual honor, Distinguished Laureate, in 1994, by the Kansas Chapter of the College. He was a member of the Kansas Medical Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Cloud County (Kansas) Medical Society, and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He was a preceptor for medical students from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
He was a member of the Concordia Elks Club, Concordia Moose Club, Topeka Masonic Lodge #17. He had just received his certificate for being a member of the Masons for 65 years. He was also a member of ISIS Shrine, Salina, Kansas.
He was active as an amateur radio operator, and participated in many radio events and emergency communications. He learned to fly in the Air Force, and subsequently held a private pilot’s license for 20 years, while owning and flying several airplanes during that time.
He was a member of the Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church, Concordia, Kansas, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Shawnee, Kansas.
He was married to June Ransom Fowler for 48 years; she preceded him in death in 1996. His parents, Morrill and Grace Carlson preceded him in death, and also a grandson, Christopher Colyer, in 2001.
He is survived by two twin sisters: Shirley Bauer, and her husband, John, Concordia, Kansas and Virginia Davis, and her husband, Russell,, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also survived by his son, Dr. Wayne L. Fowler, Jr., and his wife, Deborah Fowler, Shawnee, Kansas; daughter, Deborah Colyer and husband, Dr. E. S. Colyer, Lander, Wyoming; five grandchildren: Dr. Amy Fowler and her husband, Andrew Norton-Mitchell, Lawrence, Kansas, Jeremy Fowler, and his wife, Heather Dixon-Fowler, Boone, North Carolina, Jeffrey Fowler, Overland Park, Kansas, David Colyer, Lander, Wyoming, and Ashley Colyer, Lander Wyoming; three great-grandchildren: Riley June Fowler and Jackson Clay Fowler, Boone, North Carolina and Enzo Norton-Mitchell, Lawrence, Kansas and by numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Friday, November 20, 2009 at 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 5325 Nieman Road, Shawnee, Kansas 66203 followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm. A visitation will also be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of Epiphany,117 W. 8th Street, Concordia, Kansas, followed by the service at 2:00 pm and burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
