A visitation will be held, Friday, September 11, 2009 from 4-5 p.m. at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 1-3 p.m. at the chapel.
Jesse L. “Jack” Nead

Jesse L. “Jack” Nead, 66, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, August 28, 2009.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Nead and Betty (Kipper) Nead a sister Betty Jane Gentry, and his former wife Rebecca Nead. He is survived by his wife of 11 years Dr. Danna White D.C. of the home; two sons Jack M. daughter-in-law Joyce Nead and Scott A. Nead; step-daughter Melanie Hokanson; five grandchildren Jordan Nead, J.J. Nead, Amanda Hokanson, Shawn Hokanson, Johnaman Nead; and one great grandchild Jaden Hokanson, and niece Jessica Gentry
Jack was an accomplished tenor saxophone player. In the 60’s his band was called “ Jack Nead and the Jumping Jacks”. His entire career was related to the music field. He was the national sales manager for AVLEX Corporation at the time of his death. Jack was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and a former member of Mutual Musicians Foundation. And a current member of NAMM.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity of donor’s choice. The family asks that you please dress casual and wear your Kansas City Chiefs gear.
Visitation and Funeral Services
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the chapel.
Shirley C. Cockrell

Shirley C. Cockrell, 86, of Prairie Village, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at her home.
Shirley was born September 2, 1923 to Harry and Inez Mills in La Cygne, Kansas. She graduated from Westport High School in 1941. After high school Shirley married Thomas M. Cockrell on November 21, 1945. He preceded her in death in January 1998.
Shirley is survived by her three sons Steve (Mary) Cockrell, Kansas City, Missouri; Gordon (Lisa) Cockrell, Republic, Missouri; and Jeff (Twyla) Cockrell, Grandview, Missouri; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three nephews and a niece.
Michael Sopko

Michael Sopko, age 67, lost his long battle with cancer September 5, 2009.
Michael was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lived most of his childhood in Wickliffe and Willoughby. He moved to the Kansas City area while he was in the Air Force and liked it so well he decided to stay.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mike Sopko, his mother Stella (Nadolski) Sopko, and baby sister, Michele. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Lynn Sopko; son Michael Andrew; daughters Melissa MacDonald, her husband Kenneth, Lisa Sopko her husband Kevin Fogarty; sister Jane Piszczor her husband Bart with their children Stacey, Beth, Kim and Andrew; mother-in-law Jean Walters; sisters-in-law Donna Ranes, Robbin McGuire her husband TJ, Diana Gardner her husband Lance; brothers-in-law, Vance Walters, Richard Talley his wife Diane, Tom Griffin, Edward Griffin his wife Sandi, Richard Griffin his wife Christie, Keith Griffin, Darrell Walters his wife Patsy.
Michael had a lifelong love of photography and gardening and was most at rest when cutting his grass and tending his many beautiful flowers. He and his family lived in Shawnee from November 1967 until May of 2007 when they moved to DeSoto, Kansas.
After his discharge from the Air Force in December of 1966, he started working for Crick Camera Shop, previously located in Brookside. He worked there until the past couple months when his illness made it impossible to continue. Michael will be remembered for his honesty, hard work, loyalty and his dry sense of humor. He was a very special person who was loved by many and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas; inurnment in the Resurrection Cemetery.
Miriam Detweiler

Miriam R. Detweiler, 84, Lenexa, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Sunrise Assisted Living of Lenexa, Kansas.
Miriam was born September 13, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa to George C. and Marie (Bye) Thomas. She lived in Chillicothe, Missouri from 1964 until February of 2009. She was a homemaker and volunteered for the Dewey Elementary School library for 20 years. She was member of the United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, Missouri.
Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald M. Detweiler and son, Kirk Detweiler. Survivors include her daughter, Dawn Parsons- Starke, Kansas City, Missouri; son, Mark C. Detweiler, San Francisco, California; son-in-law, William Starke and daughter-in-law, Rowena Nery Detweiler.

Steven R. Anderson

Steven Robert Anderson, 62, Bennington, Kansas succumbed to illness Friday, September 4, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.
Steve was raised in Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Emporia State University where he met his wife of 39 years, Peggy (Skwarlo) Anderson, who survives. They have two children, Steven “Andy” of Denver, Colorado and Julie Banninger (husband Chris), of Salina, Kansas.
A mainframe computer programmer and information systems specialist, most of Steve’s career was spent with Best Buy Co. in Minnesota. His work there led to his promotion to Sr. Vice President/Chief Information Officer. He won the RITA, Interactive Summit and Smithsonian Awards. He later was CIO of Paper Warehouse, Minnesota and went on to Target Corporation, Salina, Kansas. He recently retired to a hobby farm in Bennington, Kansas to be closer to his grandchildren, Corbin and Brooke Banninger. He enjoyed the quieter life, tending his chores. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Parma Anderson and brother, Cris. He is also survived by his brother, Rick Anderson, Haysville, Kansas; sister, Parma Sue McCaffree, Valley Center, Kansas.
Steve’s dry sense of humor will be missed by his friends and family. His caring presence will never be forgotten.
Visitation and Funeral Service
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee; burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm Thursday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
James F. Werner

James F. Werner, 59, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House.
Jim was born in midtown Kansas City to Fred and Juanita Werner. After high school and time served with the Kansas National Guard, Jim joined the Pipefitter apprenticeship program and graduated in August 1975. Jim rose through the ranks of Pipefitter Local Union 533 to become a superintendent for Scurlock Refrigeration, Midwest Mechanical Contractors and the Fagan Company. Jim supervised major projects in the Kansas City area including the New York Life Building (Aquila Headquarters), One Kansas City Place, Sisters of Charity Renovation in Leavenworth, The Water Works project in North Kansas City, and the Sprint Campus in Overland Park. Later, Jim became the primary project manager for the Fagan Company prior to his retirement in 2000.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Juanita Werner. Jim is survived by his wife of 39 years, Fran of Shawnee, Kansas; sister Nancy Miller of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers Fred Werner of Raymore, Missouri, Bill Werner of Kansas City, Missouri, Joe Werner of Harrisonville, Missouri; daughters Kristin Warner (Brad) of Olathe, Kansas, Suzanne Reith (Don) of Shawnee, Kansas, son David Werner (Katie) of Leawood, Kansas; and five wonderful grandchildren. Jim was greatly loved by family and friends and will be missed everyday.

Velma Bogina

Velma M. Bogina, age 80, of Lenexa, Kansas passed away September 2, 2009.
She was born in Arma, Kansas to Velma Cerne Rank and Roger Rank. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Pittsburg, Kansas. She also attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. Velma was a school teacher in Liberal, Kansas, at Union School #9 near Arma, and at Holy Trinity School in Lenexa, Kansas. Velma was active in Pilot Club International, the Daughters of Isabela, and the Women’s Republican Club of Lenexa. She was also a founding member of the Lenexa Historical Society.
She is survived by her children Kathleen Bogina, of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, August Bogina, III, Shawnee, Kansas, Michael Bogina, Olathe, Kansas and Mark Bogina, Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren Michael, Ashleigh, Caroline and Elizabeth; her sister Carmen Ginardi, Pittsburg, Kansas; and her brother Roger J. Rank, Arma, Kansas.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 8, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, and also Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 92nd Street and Park, Lenexa, Kansas. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Entombment will be at Resurrection Mausoleum.
Lois C. Smith

Lois Catherine Smith, 85, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away September 2, 2009.
Lois was born October 3, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Claude and Barbara Helfrey Morrison. She lived in the Kansas City area most or her life. She retired from Pyramid Life Insurance in 1983 and was a member of Holy Trinity Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan J. Smith in 1990 and by two daughters, Barbara Laws in 1988 and Dianne Carney in 1993. She is survived by three grandchildren, Patricia Leihy Williams, Charlene Kuepper, and Paul Carney. She is also survived by seven great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside Services
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 5, at the St. Mary Cemetery in Louisburg, Kansas.
