Ivan D. Goldberg

Ivan D. Goldberg of Lenexa, Kansas died April 29, 2009 at the home. 

 

He was born in 1934, the son of Max and Frances Goldberg, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He had been a resident of Lenexa since 1979.  He received his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1956, his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1961 following which he received his Postdoctoral Fellowship at Rutgers University  in New Brunswick, New Jersey 1961-62, a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 1962-63, a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the U.S. Army Biological Labs., Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland 1963-65.  From 1965-1971, he was a Microbial Geneticist at the Microbial Physiology and Genetics Branch at Fort Detrick.  In 1971, he was appointed an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.  In 1977, he was appointed a full Professor continuing until his retirement in 2000.

 

His many interests included traveling, collecting American Indian Artifacts and antiques.  He was a member of the Lenexa Rotary Club and Rotarian of the Year in 2006.  He is survived by his wife Noveta Goldberg, children Micki Wehmeier (spouse Gary; grandchildren Max and Alex), Judy Goldberg-Parker (spouse Gordon; grandchildren Adam and Kylie) and Lisa Goldberg, stepchildren Nick Russell (wife Elly; grandchildren Joshua and Michaela) and Vikki Westerhoff (spouse Patrick); sister-in-law Pam Pruitt and numerous other family members. 

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice, Kansas City, Missouri; Lenexa Rotary Club, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice. 

 

Visitation and Memorial Service

 

Services will be held at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee on Saturday, May 2, 2009 with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and memorial service at 2 p.m. 

Ronald A. Hoffman

April 28, 2009

Ronald A. Hoffman, 78, Fairway, Kansas, passed away Tuesday April 28, 2009, at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City, Missouri.  

 

Ron was born April 21, 1931 to Hoyt and Claire Hoffman in Kansas City, Missouri.  He graduated from Westport High School and attended Kansas City University (UMKC).  Ron served in the United States Army during the Korean War.  After his time in the service Ron married Martha Walker, in Osawatomie, Kansas.  He was an honorary alumnus of Baker University and a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinphonia.  Ron retired from Midwest Research Institute as an Accountant after 40 years of service. 

 

He is preceded in death by a sister, Jan Glavas.  Survivors include his wife of over fifty years, Martha, three sons Steven Hoffman, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Stuart Hoffman and wife Anne, Fairway, Kansas, Scott and wife Catherine, Shawnee, Kansas; a brother, Dale Hoffman and wife Marilyn, Palos Verdes Estates, California; five grandchildren, Wesley and Meghan Hoffman, Winfield, Kansas, Riley and Parker Hoffman, Fairway, Kansas, and Griffith Hoffman, Shawnee, Kansas; three great-grandchildren, Layke, Chloe, and Addison all of Winfield, Kansas; and an aunt, Voncille Hoffman, Overland Park, Kansas. 

 

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to a charity of the donors choice. 

 

Visitation Services

 

A memorial visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  A private memorial service will be held.   

Charles (Chuck) Godbout

April 28, 2009

Charles (Chuck) Godbout, 79, of Raytown, Missouri passed away April 28, 2009.  Charles (Chuck) was born February 4, 1930 in Axtell, Kansas to John and Mary (Phillips) Godbout. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a son, Greg Godbout.  He is survived by his wife Johnnie of the home; by his daughter Kathy Godbout; his daughter-in-law Mary Godbout; and by his grandchildren John and Elizabeth Godbout.  Chuck is also survived by his brother Robert Godbout and by his sister Dolores McDonald. 

 

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church.

 

Visitation and Funeral Services

 

A visitation will be held Thursday, April 30, 2009 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Roeland Park, Kansas, from 7 to 8:30 pm with the rosary recited at 7 pm.  A funeral service will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 at 10 am at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee,  followed by a graveside service in Seneca, Kansas at 2:30 pm.

Sally H. Marshall

Sally H. Marshall, 81, of Shawnee, formerly of Lee’s Summit, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009.   

 

Sally was born, November 14, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri.  After graduating from high school in Mexico, Missouri, Sally attended Central College and received a Bachelor’s degree of Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  On March 8, 1952, Sally married a dentist from Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Dr. Robert E. Lee Marshall in Bentonville, Arkansas.  Sally was an accomplished golfer, having scored two aces.  Sally enjoyed boating playing bridge, traveling the world with her husband, gardening and being a homemaker.  She was  a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at Truman Medical Center.

 

Sally leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Dr. Robert Marshall of Shawnee, Kansas; daughter Lesa Brazeale and husband Lance, Shawnee; a son  Lee Marshall and wife Celeste, Cincinnati, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice, 9220 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.

A private celebration of Sally’s life will be held in the future. 

Alan B. Cunningham

April 28, 2009

Alan B. Cunningham passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2008 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. 

 

Alan was born November 23, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  After graduating from North Side High School in Fort Worth, Texas, Alan received his Bachelor’s Degree in both French and Philosophy from Chico State University, later receiving a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from the University of Kansas.  Alan taught Italian at University of California-Berkeley, University of Nevada-Reno, and University of Kansas, and retired from teaching Philosophy for 26 years at Johnson County Community College in 1996.

 

As the son of an Air Force Colonel, Alan lived life to the fullest and enjoyed living in places as diverse as Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, Turkey, France, Italy and Morocco.  Alan was a true renaissance man who enjoyed traveling, conversing in Italian and French, and the shooting sports.  Alan was an avid motorcycle enthusiast for sixty years.

 

Alan is survived by two daughters, Rani Self and her husband Bob, Valley Glen, California; Anne Jackson and her husband Craig, Manhattan Beach, California; a son, Ivan Cunningham, Lenexa, Kansas and their mother, Vallapa Herzog, Cha-am, Thailand; two brothers, Dale Cunningham and his wife Liz, Sweden; Craig Cunningham and his wife Cathy, Seattle, Washington; three grandchildren, Margaret and William Self, Valley Glen, California; and Catherine “Siri” Jackson, Manhattan Beach, California. 

 

Donations can be made in Alan B. Cunningham’s honor to the National Rifle Association or Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s National Motorcycle Safety Fund.

A Celebration of Alan’s life will be held at noon on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Four Colonies Clubhouse #3, 8100 Monrovia, Lenexa, Kansas. 


 

 

Michael G. Zeleznak

April 27, 2009

Michael G. Zeleznak, 86, of Overland Park, KS passed away April 27, 2009. Mike was born on Strawberry Hill in KCK, the son of Croatian immigrants.  He starred in several sports at Ward HS and in football at K-State.  He was a WWII veteran, serving as Captain with the 1271st Engr. Combat Battalion in Europe.  He worked for HNTB Consulting Engineers for 35 years.  He was known for his love of family, football and golf and for his generous and loving spirit. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Patricia, and 5 children, Mary (Henry) of Denver, CO, Mike (Karen) of  Topeka, KS, Karen (Jim) of  St. Paul, MN, Kathy (Mike) of Belton, MO, Jim (Jennifer) of San Antonio, TX and 5 grandchildren.

 

Visitation and Funeral Services

 

Services will be held Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Rd, Roeland Park, KS.  Rosary at 10 am followed by visitation. Funeral mass at 11am, with burial services at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Agnes Church or the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Charles A. Bright

Charles A. Bright, 88, Shawnee, Kansas went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, April 26, 2009.     

        

Charlie was born October 14, 1920 in Ray County, Missouri to Anjil Raridan and Bess C. (Kirkpatrick) Bright. He married Helen Myers on January 24, 1943. Charlie was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII, serving in Panama.  He worked at KCP&L  as chief analyst of plant records until his retirement in 1985. 

 

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen (Myers) Bright on Jan. 25, 2005; two sisters, Evelyn and Ruby and two brothers, Thomas and Samuel. Survivors include his daughter, Paula Anderson, her husband, Kevin; son, Ken Bright, his wife, Nan; three granddaughters; one grandson; five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. Charlie will be remembered for his beautiful harmonica playing and whistling almost to the end.  All those who knew him loved him and he loved all those he knew.  

 

 

Memorial contributions may be made to either Hope Lutheran School for their scholarship fund, Kansas City Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Hope Lutheran Church; burial in the Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.

Loretta Faye Rowland

April 27, 2009

Loretta Faye Rowland, 81, Lenexa, Kansas passed away Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri. 

 

Loretta was born August 4, 1927 in Brownington, Missouri to John Omer and Edna (Dodson) McElhaney.  She graduated from Rural Hartman High School in Kansas City, Missouri.  Loretta was an active member of the Nall Avenue Baptist Church and the JOY group.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her family cheering on the KU Jayhawks, and sewing for her family and friends. 

 

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Rowland on January 23, 2005. Survivors include her two daughters, Beverly Rupert and her husband, Paul, Roeland Park, Kansas and Becky Stiles and her husband, Joe, Lawrence, Kansas; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Schrepel and husband Bryan, Lansing, Kansas, Melinda Rupert, Mission, Kansas, Eric Rupert, and Katherine Rupert, both of Roeland Park, Kansas; Katie Stiles, Kansas City, Missouri, Andy Stiles and Matt Stiles, both of Lawrence, Kansas.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice or to the Kansas City Hospice House.

Donald P. Woolery

April 25, 2009

Donald P. Woolery, Sr., of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at Presbyterian Manor.   He was born on November 7, 1911, in Stewartsville, Missouri.

 

Don was a veteran of WWII, and began a career in the restaurant business in Kansas City, Kansas, that lasted many years. That came to include the Nu-Way Sandwich Shops at 13th and State Avenue and Seventh and Southwest Boulevard, the Wyandotte Courthouse Café, and the Wyandotte Café at 78th and State Avenue.

 

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Berniece and two sons, Don Jr. (Cheryl) and Joel (Beth).  Also, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Private Graveside

 

Private services will be held at Fort Leavenworth Cemetery.

Dalton Eli Hawkins

April 25, 2009

Dalton Eli Hawkins, 18, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away on April 24th, 2009 in Lawrence, Kansas.  Dalton was born on August 13th, 1990, in Shawnee, Kansas, the beloved son of Shawn and Rhonda Hawkins.

 

A 2008 Graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest, Dalton was currently enrolled as an honors student at the University of Kansas, majoring in pre-pharmacy. He was recently named to the dean’s list and was a member of the Mount Oread Scholars. Dalton lived in Ellsworth residence hall and was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity.

 

Dalton brought energy with him just by entering a room. He’ll be remembered as the one with the biggest grin, the one always up for having fun. He was soft-spoken and funny, collecting friends wherever he went. He was a competitive bowler, enjoyed working outdoors, grew up playing sports and video games, dirt biking, and was an avid cyclist with his father, Shawn. He was a member of Crossroads Church in Shawnee. His sister Makenzie summed Dalton up as “a true role model.”

 

Dalton is survived by his parents, Shawn and Rhonda Hawkins of Shawnee; grandparents Don and Arlene Teel of Shawnee, Roy and Karen Snook of Hoker, Oklahoma, and Kathleen Hawkins of Johnston, Iowa. He is survived by his sister Makenzie of the home, sister Misty Burnett of Panama City, Florida, niece Ashley and nephew Aaron of Panama City. In addition he will be missed by a large extended family and a vast number of friends from his hometown and college communities. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Louis Vincent Hawkins.  A smiling soul, both unforgettable and irreplaceable.

 

A Memorial Fund has been established and the family request donations to Commerce Bank.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 27th, 6-8 pm, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Services will be held Tuesday, April 28th, 2009, 10 am, at Crossroads Christian Church in Shawnee, with the burial in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
