Larry G. Fussell

Larry G. Fussell, 52 of Olathe, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, March 31, 2009 after a brief bout with cancer. 

 

Larry was born in Houston, Texas on December 6, 1956 to Harry and Vera Fussell who moved shortly thereafter to raise their family in Overland Park.  Larry was a 1975 graduate of Shawnee Mission West High School and attended Kansas State University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.  He graduated from Baker University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.  Larry was manager of information services for Kiewit Power Engineers in Lenexa, Kansas.

 

Survivors include his wife, Paula of the home; daughter Laura and fiancée Kyle Lorenzen of Overland Park; father Harry of Lake Ozark, Missouri; mother Vera of Overland Park; brother Gary of Raytown, Missouri; sister Debra (Scott) Crockett of Belton, Missouri; aunt Norma Polizzi, Orlando, Florida; mother-in-law Donna Burger of Shawnee; and many aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law and nephews and nieces, all of whom will miss “Uncle Lare” terribly. 

 

The family suggests contributions to Vitas Hospice, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. 

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a Rosary will be recited at 6 pm.  Larry was a devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m on Saturday, April 4, 2009.  Cremation to follow.

Mary L. Hurtado

March 28, 2009

Mary L. Hurtado, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away March 27, 2008.  Mary was born in Kansas City, Ks to Amor and Mary (Talavera) Hurtado, one of nine children.  She worked for many years as a nurse in Bonner Springs, KS.  Mary is survived by her sister Andrea Carrillo and husband David, by her brother Thomas Hurtado and his wife Judy, by her brother Joseph S. Hurtado and his wife Celia, and by her sister Susan Misenhelter and her husband Scott.  She is also Survived by many nieces and nephews.

 

Memorial Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Cancer Action, c/o Amos Family Funeral Home.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

Services will be held Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, with a visitation starting at 6 PM and a funeral service following at 7 PM.  Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10AM at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.

Barbara E. Smith

March 26, 2009

Barbara E. Smith, 78, passed away Thursday, March 26, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. 

 

Barbara was born July 28, 1930 to the late R. Dwight and Cecelia Weinland in Colby, Kansas.  Barbara moved to the Kansas City area at the age of fourteen and attended Wyandotte High School.  On July 11, 1947 she married James “J.O.” Smith in Olathe, Kansas.  Barbara was employed as an Assignment Clerk with Southwestern Bell telephone and retired in 1986.  She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, the Telephone Pioneers, and the VFW Auxilliary #846. 

 

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, James; two daughters, Sharon L. Smith, Salt Lake City, Utah and Colleen Truelsen and husband Gary, Vallejo, California; a son, Michael D. Smith and wife Linda, Olathe, Kansas; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.  

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Pius X Catholic Chuch, 5500 Woodson, Mission, KS 66202. 

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 30 at St. Pius X Catholic Church.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.  Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. 

Dianna Lee Brown

Dianna Lee Brown, 60, of Shawnee, Kansas, born November 15, 1948, has gone to be with her father, mother, and all her precious pets who have gone before her.

 

She experienced her life to it’s fullest.  She adored her family, Tyson (son) & Angela Jones and Tamalee (Daughter) & Joey Baker.  Her greatest joy was her grandchildren; Ian Jones and Tyson, Taggert, Trinity and Tristan Baker.  Through her walk on this earth, she made many friends at work, play, and in her church.  She also has the love of her aunt, Wanda Fulmer and her family; her sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Paul Orick, her cousin Patty Haller, as well as all their family members. 

 

By “Three Little Squeezes” of her hand in ours, she let us know that she loved us.  We will miss her deeply.

Gregory (Greg) Louis Martin

March 25, 2009

Gregory (Greg) Louis Martin, 54 of Kansas City died suddenly on March 25th, 2009.

 

He was born on May 11, 1954 in Hanover, Kansas.  He graduated from Hanover High School in 1972.  He attended Conception Seminary in Conception, Missouri for 2 years.  He worked many years as a floral designer.  He was married to Judith (Judy) Kotecki-Martin for 16 years.

 

Greg cherished his family and friends.  He had a gentle spirit and compassionate heart.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a very spiritual person.  He loved flowers, gardening and nature. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Josephine and John Martin and a brother, Bernard.  Survivors include his wife Judy and 7 siblings:  Sister Joan Martin, RSM, Mary Goeckel (Leo), Jim Martin (Vivian),  Betty Goeckel (La Vearn), Gene Martin (Anita),  Don Martin (Susan), and John Martin (Jolene).  Extended family includes many nieces and nephews.

 

If you wish, a memorial contribution can be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 30, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 West 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas.  Visitation will be held at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee on Sunday, March 29, 2009 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.

Joel Benjamin Morris

Joel Benjamin Morris died March 23, 2009. 

 

Born September 5, 1969 in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Royce L. “Lonnie” Morris and Susan B. Rozelle.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Morris, and his grandparents, LeRoy and Ruth Fugitt and, Leon and Catheryn Morris.

 

Joel attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, Kansas, where he was involved in their music program.  He loved music, reading, sports, sharing his talent of singing, and was especially fond of his nieces and nephews.

 

He is survived by father, Royce L. “Lonnie” Morris, and wife Cyndi of Ozawkie, Kansas, and mother, Susan Rozelle of Arkansas City, Kansas.  He is also survived by three sisters, Sarah Kempke (Darin) of Furlong, Pennsylvania, Emily Jarboe (David) of Arkansas City, Kansas, and Abby Dickey (Bryan) of Arkansas City, Kansas, as well as seven nieces and nephews, and several aunts and uncles.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Baker University Vocal Music Department (P. O. Box 65, Baldwin City, Kansas  66006) or Trinity Lutheran Church (5601 W. 62nd Street,  Mission, Kansas 66202).

Martha Martin

March 23, 2009

Martha Martin, 91, Shawnee, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at the Sweet Life at Rosehill. 

 

Martha was born January 29, 1918 to John C. and Edna Emerson in Joplin, Missouri. 

 

Martha is survived by her loving husband, Wade H. Martin, Jr.; two sons, Dr. Wade “Chip” Martin, III, and wife Mary, St. Louis, Missouri and Dr. John Christopher Martin and wife Maureen, Edmond, Oklahoma;  a sister, Virginia Voelker; three grandsons Matt, Scott, and David; and two nephews.

Mary Jo “M.J.” Allen

March 23, 2009

Mary Jo “M.J.” Allen, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away Monday,  March 23, 2009 of bacterial meningitis.

 

M.J. and her two children, Emily and David Hoops, had just returned from what M.J. described as “the best week of my life.”  The three had spent a week in Mexico, part of the Shawnee Mission West High School senior trip.

 

Emily and David were always her first priority.  As a former teacher, M.J. was strongly committed to their education, both in the classroom and beyond.  The three traveled together extensively, and M.J. encouraged and supported their interests, whether it was Emily’s horsemanship or David’s baseball.

 

She was also a successful businesswoman.  A Johnson County home builder, realtor, and developer, her most recent project was the Courts at Fairfield Village in Olathe.  Other projects include the Villas at Parkside, and the Woods of Hidden Valley, both in Shawnee.   She loved to create beautiful homes for the people with whom she worked.

 

M.J. was a generous soul…to her children and their friends and their parents; to her church, Unity of Overland Park; to her children’s school, Shawnee Mission West; and to her community. 

 

She is missed by her children, her adopted sisters, her associates, and her many, many friends.

A celebration of M.J.’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 28 at the Unity Church of Overland Park, 10300 Antioch.  Friends may gather from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the church.

 

Theresa Blancarte

Theresa Blancarte, 86, Shawnee, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at her home. 

 

Theresa was born October 15, 1922 to Joseph and Juana Gomez in Wilder, Kansas.  After graduating from Bonner Springs High School she attended nursing school at St. Margaret’s Hospital where she was a practical nurse for almost 30 years.  Theresa married Arnulfo Blancarte in November of 1948, he preceded her in death on April 8, 2000.  A brother Augustine Gomez also preceded her in death.  

 

She is survived by four daughters, Patricia Corrado, Shawnee, Kansas, Susan Williams and husband Ralph, Judith Sexton, and husband Neal, both of Kansas City, Kansas; Barbara Hinman and husband Tim, Smithfield, Virginia; a son, Thomas Blancarte, Shawnee, Kansas; three sisters, Betty Moore, Bessie Garr, Pauline Umbenhower; two brothers, Joe and Pete Gomez; and six grandchildren Darren, Sam, Albert, Harry, Kathryn, and Natalie.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Joseph Catholic Church; 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.

Helen “Honey” Lynch Davidson

March 23, 2009

Helen “Honey” Lynch Davidson, 87, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at her home.  

Mrs. Davidson was born in Kansas City, Kansas.  She was in the mortgage business and was a past member of Queen of the Holy Rosary. 

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, two step-sons, three step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen E. Davidson, in 1994 and brother, John C. Lynch, in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Shawnee or Hospice Care of Kansas.

Mass of Resurrection will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5501 Monticello, Shawnee, Kansas on Thursday, March 26th, 10 a.m., with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.  Visitation will be Wednesday, March 25th, 6-8 p.m., at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, with Rosary at 6:30 p.m.
