Bobby Ray Wilson, 79, Shawnee, Kansas passed away Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Trinity Nursing and Rehab, Merriam, Kansas.

Mr. Wilson was born August 4, 1929 in Columbia, Kentucky to Davis and Mary (Harman) Wilson. He was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War. Bobby was a locator for Southwestern Bell for 30 years until his retirement.  He is survived by his four sons, Jim Wilson, Brighton, Missouri, Don Wilson, Shawnee, Kansas, Kevin Wilson, Olathe, Kansas and Robert Wilson, Shawnee, Kansas; four daughters, Melony A. Smart, Shawnee, Kansas, Renee Collins, Oak Grove, Missouri, Sherry Helmke, Shawnee, Kansas and Bobbie Jo Wilson, Eudora, Kansas; two sisters, Sharon and Judy; brother, Billy; 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Visitation and Funeral Service

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee; burial in the National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Friends may call from 12-1 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

Anne Marie Batliner

Anne Marie (O’Brien) Batliner, Shawnee, Kansas passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008. She was born July 29, 1959 and was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area.

 

Anne was a 1978 graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy and held an associate degree in business from Penn Valley Community College. She was a ten-year employee of SkillPath Seminars, Mission, KS. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Larry J. Batliner, Sr., sons, Larry Jr., Thomas and daughter, Michelle. She also leaves her parents, Vincent J. and Norine O’Brien; brother, Vincent “Tony” O’Brien and wife, Patricia; father and mother-in-law, John and Ruthann Batliner; many brothers and sisters-in-law, countless friends and other relatives. Thank you to all the wonderful people who showed such great love for Anne  and her family.

Sr. Magdalene Carole Dian Francis- Lohmar, 78, Merriam, KS died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church; burial will be in the Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Dale F. VanLerberg

Dale F. VanLerberg, 82, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away November 12, 2008.

 

Dale was born August 29, 1926 in Shawnee, Kansas to Paul and Madeline VanLerberg.  He attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Shawnee Mission North Rural School and Fort Hays University.  Dale served as a Merchant Marine and in the US Army during WWII.  He was a life long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus.  He was also a proud member of the American Legion.  Dale was a dedicated father and grandfather, he touched the lives of many, and will be forever loved and remembered.

 

Dale was preceded in death by his parents and brothers (Clarence and Dick) and sister-in-law “Cleo”.  He is survived by his wife, Rosemary VanLerberg, and family; Marsha Callahan (James), Joseph Glynn, Susan Hemberger (Dr. Glenn Hemberger), Kathy Thompson-Rausch (Roger), Patricia Glynn, and his sister, Mary Alice Viscek (Charlie), his brother Albert VanLerberg and sister-in-law Dorothy VanLerberg.  Also his beloved grandchildren:  Amanda, Danny, Dale, Ryan, Jennifer, Brett, Meghan, and Joey. His passing will be deeply felt by all the VanLerberg nieces and nephews.

 

Memorial contributions in Dale’s memory may be to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association.

A visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 7 pm followed by the rosary at 7 pm at Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  Funeral Mass will be 11 am Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee, followed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa. 

Fern L. Estes

Fern L. Estes, 80, Overland Park, KS passed away Monday, Nov. 10,  2008.  Fern was born May 16, 1928 in Scranton, KS to William F. and Cora (Shields) Gabler. She was a 1946 graduate of Osawatomie High School. Fern is survived by her husband, Charles “Doug” Estes of the home; three children, Debbie (Bill) Mize, Overland Park, KS,  Daryl (Pam) Estes, Overland Park, KS and Darlene (Bob) Covell, Shawnee, KS; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Colin) McDonald, Eric Covell, Nathan (Susan) Mize, Laura (Jeff) Hamons, Kevin Mize, Daniel (Stefanie) Estes, Andrea (Benny) Bowers and four great grandchildren, Connor McDonald, Parker McDonald, Elise Hamons and Kaitlyn Mize.

Melvin “Mel” Ewing

Melvin “Mel” Rex Ewing, 74, Shawnee, Kansas passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Center.   

 

Mel is survived by his wife Janet of the home one daughter Christine (Charles) Clark, Shawnee, Kansas, two sons Ronald (Cindy) Ewing, Hendersonville, North Carolina and Gary (Allison) Ewing, Lenexa, Kansas, nine grandchildren and two great-grand children. Mel was employed by the Rock Island Railroad for 21 years. After leaving the Rock Island he found employment with Hulcher Services for an additional 21 years. Mel is a member of the Elks Lodge #1042 Holiday Island, Akansas and a member of Bonner Springs United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, at Bonner Springs United Methodist Church, Bonner Springs, Kansas 66012. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bonner Springs United Methodist Church.

Woodrow W. “Woody” Ridgway

Woodrow  W.  Ridgway,  88,  of  Lenexa,  KS, passed away, Saturday,  November  8,  2008  at  Shawnee  Mission  Medical Center.   

 

Woodrow  (Woody)  was  born  in  Bradenton, FL on May 29, 1920.  He  was  a  warehouse manager for the Shawnee Mission School District for over 30 years and retired in 1986. After he  retired,  he  worked  for  All  Nations Flag Co. Woody’s passion  was  the  history  of  flags.  He  not  only  was a collector  of  flags,  but  gave  numerous  presentations to community  and  civic  groups.  He  was  a  member  and past President of NAVA (North American Vexillological Assn.) and was  actively  involved in the Dwight Cowles American Legion Post  and served as Post Commander from 1976-1977.  He was a charter member of the Antioch Church of the Nazarene. He was an Army Air Forces Veteran of WWII.

 

He  was  preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ridgway, on January  11,  2008  and  one grandson. Survivors include his sons;  Glenn  and  Rose Mary Ridgway, Lee’s Summit, MO; Dean and  Debbie  Ridgway,  Lenexa,  KS  and Paul Scott and Cindy Ridgway,  Lenexa,  KS;  a sister, Kathryn Sargent, of Maine; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

 

Visitation and Funeral Services

 

Funeral  services  will be 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Antioch Church of the Nazarene with burial in Johnson County Memorial  Gardens. Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday at the  Amos  Family Chapel of Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, the family  suggests  contributions to the Antioch Church of the Nazarene, 7600 Antioch Rd., Overland Park, KS 66204.

Wanda Mathews

Wanda Lee Mathews, 78, Shawnee, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri. 

Wanda was born August 7, 1930 in Bonner Springs, Kansas to Huron A. and Margaret (Oelschlaeger) Lingo.  Wanda and her husband, James opened the Carpet Corner in 1968 in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  She retired in 2004.  Wanda was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Mathews May 29, 1998 and her sister, Mae Meyer.  Survivors include her three daughters, Rebecca Hipsher, Kansas City, Kansas, Janice Mathews, Parkville, Missouri and Barbara (Doug) Earp, Lenexa, Kansas; three sons, James M. (Barbara) Mathews, Eudora, Kansas, Jeffery (Teri) Mathews, Smithville, Missouri and Michael (Leslie) Mathews, Shawnee, Kansas; 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
