Mary Evelyn Dame

Mary Evelyn Dame, 84, Olathe, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Villa St. Francis.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband Shelby Edward, and one son Thomas Dame. 

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Jon) Hope, Shawnee, Kansas; Penny Shacklett, Shawnee,; a son William (Carol) Dame, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; one brother Russell Martin, Blue Springs, Missouri, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

Visitation and Funeral Service

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 20 at Amos Chapel with burial in Chapel Hill Memory Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas. 

Alfred Maxwell Meyers

Alfred Maxwell Meyers, lovingly known as Papa, of Shawnee, Kansas, went to be with our Lord on October 12, 2008 at the age of 100. Born on September 2, 1908, to Alfred Moyer and Carrie Ellen Meyers, at the family farmhouse in Merriam, Kansas where he was raised with his three brothers who preceded him in death.

He was quite the athlete, playing basketball, football, track and golf at Shawnee Mission Rural High School. He continued his love of sports at Kansas State University, where he excelled in football as the team’s center.

Following graduation, he met and married his wife Leada Grace May. Together they shared 65 years and two children, Mitzi Dee Pflumm and Jerry Ray Meyers, before her death in 1996. Jerry Ray preceded him in death in 2003. He enjoyed and doted on his large family, consisting of 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren and their families.

He proudly spent the majority of his career as an engineer with the Kansas City Structural Steel Company, where he designed a bridge over Canyon Diablo in Arizona and the headframe in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. He was an active member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church, Shawnee Historical Society and Cosmopolitan Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, was a master in his woodshop, and loved tending and sharing his roses with family and friends.

Recently, over 130 family members and friends, from California to New York, gathered to celebrate Papa’s 100th birthday at his family church. He will be greatly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shawnee United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 16th, 2008 at 11am at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, located at I-435 and Metcalf Ave.,

Edward J. Walaszek

October 12, 2008

Edward J. Walaszek, 81, passed away October 12, 2008.

Dr. Walaszek was a professor of pharmacology at the University of Kansas for 34 years, 28 of which he was the chairman of the department.  He received numerous awards for teaching and research in the field of pharmacology.  He pioneered Computer Assisted Teaching Systems, CATS,  used in medical schools throughout the United States as well as in many foreign countries.

He loved to read and work crossword puzzles and always had an interesting story to tell. He lived at Brighton Gardens for the past two years and enjoyed competing with the trivia team and socializing with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie Walaszek, son, Edward Walaszek Jr., and daughter, Sheila Walaszek.  He is also survived by his sisters, Adeline Ignarski and Estelle Palka, and his grandsons, Alex and Kevin Walaszek.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Visitation and Funeral Service

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 17 at Cure of Ars Catholic Church. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

 

Dolores Marie Holt

October 11, 2008

Dolores Marie Holt, 81, of Mission, Kansas, passed away Saturday, October 11, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.   Dolores was born August 12, 1927 in Kansas City, Kansas. 

She graduated St. Margaret’s School of Nursing.  Dolores was married to Weldon G. Holt, he preceded her in death on October 26, 1995.  She is survived by Michael A. Holt, Mission; two sisters, Rosemary Sayre, Loveland, Coilorado; Barbara J. Shamet, Overland Park, Kansas; a brother, Phil Sedlock and wife Pat, Kansas City, Kansas, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made the St. Pius X Church Building Fund.

Visitation and Funeral Service

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008 at St. Pius X Catholic Church.  Entombment will follow in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
